When your suppose to get on the road by 4 am but your on the road by 4 pm, 12 hours is a lot of drive time to make up. But best laid plans of Mice and Men don't always go as planned. We looked like the Okies of the 30's going down the road minus grandma's rocking chair. We were plum full to the gills.
Two crazy ladies, 3 dogs and a road trip ahead! |
Made our first pit stop in the beautiful town of Sayre, Oklahoma. Picked up the much needed neck pillow. What a life/neck saver.
The wind has been horrendous since this morning, making loading the car somewhat difficult. Christie had quite a time getting everything on top and tied down. It started to die down a bit but not much.
Because of all the rain we have had in Oklahoma, western Oklahoma is very green, a different sight for sure. It's not often we get to see Big Sky, Big Clouds way in the distance of western Oklahoma...Texas is even bigger! As they say everything is bigger in Texas!
We took a break at the Johnson Ranch rest stop. It is a must. When I went by once before several years ago it was very dry and desert looking and I regretted not stopping. This time I vowed to stop and take a look at this interesting landscape of beautiful arroyos and the delicate fauna that was in the area. It was quite green due to all the recent rain there was lots of flowers in bloom. If you are that way we highly suggest you take a break at this great place and soak up some of the scenery. It won't disappoint. Off in the distance was another thunderstorm brewing...more rain!
We made Amarillo around 9 pm. After a few stops we decided that it was way too windy to set the tent up so we overnighted it in a Texas rest stop and slept in the car. Not our first time to sleep in the car and most likely not our last either. After walking the dogs and getting settled we called it a day.
